1958–1959

I got married in October 1958. At first it was a struggle. I couldn’t get a job easily as I was pregnant. And once they realised that, they would turn me down. Three months after my first child was born, I got a job. I had to get a nanny to babysit. We lived on the second floor of a bedsit. We had a cooker in the room, and we shared the toilet and the bath. The bathroom was used for everything, washing the dishes and ourselves. Had to punch the gas for cooking on the stove and electric for the light, and we used paraffin heaters to stay warm. The landlord decided to sell the property, so we had to move.
